Google broke ground on the data center in Fort Wayne in 2024 and continues to make progress. Google's data centers are the backbone of the internet, providing critical digital services across industries like healthcare, banking, and government. Greater Fort Wayne Inc. is excited to partner with Google as the data center progresses. Below is more information on what a data center is, why it is important, and the benefits it will bring to the region.
We understand that there are many questions out there in the community about data centers and some misinformation floating out there too. We wanted to put together all the facts for you in one place.
Google has been building state-of-the-art, innovative data centers for years, investing in local communities, improving and strengthening local infrastructure and the environment, and working together to further community goals.
Simply put, Google does data centers differently and we are very excited that they have chosen to build here in Fort Wayne. Take a minute to see how they are already making a difference here in our community.
“My electricity bill will go up because of this data center”
Rate increases due to data centers is not likely. The 2025 large load tariff settlement approved by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) is a critical protection for existing customers. This ensures that new, very large facilities (like data centers) make long-term financial commitments to pay for their fair share of system costs. These large customers cover the costs for electric services and are not subsidized by residential and small commercial customers.
“This project is doing irreparable damage to local wetlands.”
Google is following the standard construction practice of purchasing alternative wetlands for the limited amount we are disturbing, resulting in a net gain of total wetlands in the area. The majority of the site's wetlands will be preserved and remain unaffected. Based on current estimates, approximately 32 acres of wetlands on-site, including several large (5+ acre) forested wetlands, will be avoided by the development.
“The large number of diesel generators are for more than backup power supply and will pollute the air and impact our health.”
The generators will not have health impacts to the public and are operated within all health and environmental regulations. The generators are used in emergency situations only to provide backup power and cooling technology only in the event of widespread electric utility outages. The generators will be tested monthly as mandated by EPA regulations to comply with manufacturer-recommended maintenance. The vast majority of the time, the generators will not be in operation.

Google’s $1.2M contribution allows ACRES Land Trust to permanently protect a vital tract of land in the Saint Joseph River watershed. The preserved land is expected to naturally recharge approximately 500 million gallons of groundwater annually, supporting long-term water resilience in the region. By securing this land forever, we are ensuring a long-term natural source of clean water for our region.
